Blaine Examines Sex, Drugs, Riot New Morality

By Mary L. Wissler, (Special to the CRIMSON)

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8--Psychological and disturbances are the real causes behind the so-called student revolution in morality, Dr. Graham B. Blaine Jr. '40, chief of psychiatric services, stated here today.

Speaking on sex, drugs, and extremism in a morning panel discussion at the annual meeting of the American Council on Education, Dr. Blaine observed that certain personality characteristics are related to a student's actions and attitudes toward authority.

Dr. Blaine noted that "the average college undergraduate, by his nature," prefers a sexual relationship that is emotionally and physically intimate and private, but not one that includes intercourse. But driven by an unconscious need to prove "masculinity or fertility, a college student may ignore logical precautions and unfortunate consequences He went on to observe that riots require a climate, a cause and a trigger, and while the leaders of student riots are often "emotionally ill," they require followers will not be found in "a healthy college climate." It is up to college officials, Dr. Blaine concluded, to give the students room to try out their new morality, but at the same time to protect them unnecessary harm.
