Cornell Matmen Pin Crimson, 21-11

Harvard's wrestlers, clinging to the hope of a draw with Ivy League power-house Cornell, were rebuffed rudely by a pin in the final match that beat them 21-11 Saturday.

Cornell heavyweight Dick Moore fended off an early attack by the Crimson's Tack Chace, then turned on Chace and pinned him at 1:05 of the second period to send Harvard to defeat in their first Ivy meet of the season.

Chace had the opportunity to square the team totals at 18-18 with a pin of his own, thanks to a jaws-of-defeat effort by Harvard Captain Ben Brooks in the preceeding match. Wrestling at 191 pounds, Brooks was trailing Cornell's Duane Storie by three points with 6 seconds left in the last period.

Suddenly, Brooks rolled Storie over just before the buzzer sounded. As the crowd in the IAB stood up and roared, the referee awarded Brooks two points for the reversal and three for the near-fall, giving him a 13-11 victory. The two wrestlers sprawled on the mat, forgotten in the tumult, until Harvard Coach Bob Pickett rushed out and exuberantly raised Brooks' hand.

Cornell had taken a quick 6-0 lead in the meet as Bob Stock decisioned Harvard's Howie Henjyoji 3-2 at 123, and Captain Neal Orr trounced Bing Sung, the Crimson's 130-pounder, 7-1. Tim McCarthy, wrestling at 137 for Harvard, lost two points on last period stalling penalties and settled for a 3-3 draw with Tom Meldrim.

Harvard then rallied to tie the score at 8-8 as 147-pounder Howie Durfee, back in action after a period of illness, decisioned Cornell's Doug Blise 10-3 and Ed Franquemont, going at 157 for the Crimson, smoothly defeated John Reed 6-1. But after Cornell's Geoff Stephens pinned Dave Greuel at 2:48 of the second period of their 167-pound match, and DeWitt Burlingame followed with a 6-3 victory over Chris Wickens at 177 pounds, the responsibility of overcoming a 16-8 Cornell lead fell to Brooks and Chace.

When asked how the loss affected Harvard's chances in the Ivy League, Pickett was succinct. "We can still win," he said. "Columbia can beat Cornell, and we can beat Columbia."
