Commencement activities have been compressed and reduced this year in an effort to increase senior class participation. The University has scheduled the Baccalaureate Service for 2:15 p.m., tomorrow, consolidating the graduation exercises into a three-day period.
Last year the service was moved from Sunday to Monday. Dean Watson said the change did not affect the general level of attendance, which has been falling for several years.
Senior social activities have been reduced for the second successive year. The formal dance, which was substituted for the traditional Senior Spread, will be dropped. Only an informal dance will be held Wednesday night.
A moonlight cruise had been scheduled, but was cancelled because so few people bought tickets. Dean Watson indicated that there was also "some question whether or not we could get the boat."
Dean Watson, said that traditionally fewer seniors attended commencement exercises and more attended the social functions. He considers the recent switch desirable. "If the senior class wanted the Senior Spread back again," Watson added "and would support it, we'd have it. We are delighted to do whatever the senior class wants."
