Crane Notes Tie Between Hospital, Medical School

Cambridge City Hospital will soon become affiliated with the Medical School, it was reported at the City Council meeting Monday night.

According to Mayor Edward A. Crane '35, hospital officials have been negotiating with the University for some time and an official announcement will appear shortly.

Herbert A. Shaw, Director of Medical Information, refused last night either to confirm or to deny Crane's statement. He indicated that the Boston Globe story yesterday morning was the first he had heard of the negotiations.

In a communication to City Manager John J. Curry '19, which was forwarded to the Council, Theodore A. Austin, director of the Cambridge City Hospital stated that the hospital would soon become affiliated with "a leading University."

According to Crane, Austin has recently discussed the possibility of affiliation with officials at Tufts and Boston University, as well as Harvard, but Crane stated definitely that the Harvard Medical School was the one Austin was referring to.

After Crane had identified the "leading University," Councillor Alfred E. Vellucci remarked that he had known that the city was drawing up an agreement with Harvard, but wanted to know how far the city had gone towards a binding contract. Crane stated that agreement would be reached very soon.

This Spring the city sent a resident physician at the city hospital to the Phillipines to seek interns for next year, it was also revealed at Monday night's meeting. The mission was reportedly successful, and the hospital has secured its quota of interns from Filipino medical schools.

"By this time next year," Crane stated, "it is likely that Harvard Medical School will be furnishing us their graduates as interns."

The affiliation will be connected with the hospital's $6 million modernization and expansion program.
