The varsity tennis team should continue its one-year-old tradition of making a joke out of the New England Inter-collegiate Championships when the tournament gets underway at Williams today.
Last year no other college got as far as the semi-finals as Sandy Walker, Doug Walter, Frank Ripley and Paul Sullivan all made the semis for Harvard. Sullivan eventually beat out Ripley for the singles title while Ripley and Walter took the doubles.
This time Ripley, Dave Benjamin, Clive Kileff, and either Chum Steele or Dean Peckham will be playing for Harvard in the singles. Steele and Peckham will form one doubles team and Ripley will team with Bob Inman.
Not Much Competition
Competition will be provided by . . . well, when you come right down to it, there probably won't be much competition. There are players from Williams entered, but Harvard beat Williams easily. There are players from Dartmouth entered but Harvard shut Dartmouth out. There are players from Colby and Bowdoin and M.I.T. entered, but honestly, they don't figure to do too much.
Harvard needs only two points to retire the tournament trophy. One point is awarded for a singles or doubles championship and a half point for a runner-up's school. Harvard has picked up six of the eight points needed.
