Panel Favors Mrs. Bunting Appointment

The Joint Committee on Atomic Energy yesterday reported out favorably on the appointment of Mary I. Bunting, president of Radcliffe College, to the Atomic Energy Commission. The Senate is expected to confirm her appointment next week.

At a 15-minute formal meeting yesterday morning, the Committee heard Mrs. Bunting praised by Sen. Leverett Saltonstall '14 (R-Mass.), Glen T. Seaborg, chairman of the AEC, and Sen. John R. Pastore (D.R.I.), chairman of the Joint Committee.

Following their remarks, the committee heard testimony from Mrs. Bunting on several technical matters, and then recommended her appointment by a unanimous vote. Mrs. Bunting and the Committee agreed she would undertake her duties formally on July 1.

Saltonstall Speaks

During the brief morning session, chairman Pastore read a letter from Kennedy highly praising the Radcliffe president. Slatonstall however, accompanied Mrs. Bunting into the committee room and delivered a short speech.

He called Mrs. Bunting "an outstanding citizen of my state of Massachusetts" and pointed to the many honors she had won in the field of education.

"The President has chosen wisely in selecting this distinguished educator and scientist," he said. "I am certain she will serve with distinction."

Apparently, no one asked Mrs. Bunting if she was thrilled.
