Jane Mansfield Dominates Radcliffe Swimming Meet

East House Romps

By Ann Peck

A mighty East House splashed to its second triumph in as many years yesterday in the second annual intramural swim meet. Close on the heels of the Easties, who won with 61 points, North House finished second with 57, and South House trailed with 53.

Jane Mansfield, a speedy sophomore from Whitman Hall, proved as outstanding as her namesake, as she won three races for East House. Swimmer Mansfield broke meet records in the 40-yard free-style and 40-yard backstroke, with times of 22.6 seconds and 26.7 seconds, respectively.

The key races of the afternoon were the Beatle and balloon relays. An East House quintet twisted and shouted to a first in the Beatle event, in which the contestants had to don Beatle wigs and flippers, and then kick across the 20-ft. pool without using their hands or losing their wigs.

In the balloon relay, swimmers had to blow up balloons until they burst, and then dive into the pool for one freestyle lap. East House racers ballooned as fast as they Beatled, and won this one, too.

The Southies took first in the 80-yard medley, setting a new meet record of 52.5 seconds. The time betters last year's mark by 1.9 seconds.

North House's Kay Webster plowed to victory in the 20-yard butterfly event, breaking the existing record by 5 seconds with a time of 11.6 seconds. In the 40-yard breast stroke, East House freshman Debble Brewster lost first place by falling to touch the edge of the pool with both hands at the finish. Jessica Tuchman of South House walked away with the blue ribbon.
