2 Full Professorships Announced by Faculty

Two experts on the Middle East have been promoted to the rank of full professor, Dean Ford has announced.

George Makdisi, associate professor of Arabic, will become professor of Arabic, and A. J. Meyer, associate professor of Middle Eastern Studies, has been named professor of Middle Easters Studies, Both appointments will take effect on July 1.

Makdusi, who is 43, has written on Islamic history in English and French. A native of Detroit, he has been a member of the Faculty since 1959.

Meyer, 44 years old, is an economist who has lived and worked in the Middle East and is now studying the North African region. The associate director of the Center for Middle Easters Studies, he earlier was director of research for the Harvard Pakistan Project. He was born in Hawarden, lowa, and has been on the Faculty since 1955.
