The Harvard rowing season opens this afternoon when Coach Fred Cabot's lightweight crews face Columbia and Rutgers on the Charles. The races, which will be run over the Henley distance of a mile and five-sixteenths, will begin at 3:20 p.m., with the varsity rowing the last race at 5:40 p.m. They will finish below the M.I.T. boathouse.
After a number of boating changes early this week, Cabot came up with a varsity combination late Wednesday that has shown good speed and has a definite edge over the JV's. But with five sophomores, including an untried stroke in the first boat, inexperience will provide the big question mark.
Sophomore Peter Schwab, who moved into the stroke position just this week, "has been a most pleasant surprise," Cabot said. Columbia, the loser last week to Princeton, does not figure to be as tough as last spring, but Rutgers, which will race only in the varsity contest, has already defeated Penn this year and may be the team to beat.
The stern four of the varsity contains all sophomores, including Schwab, Roman Nowygrod at seven, Alan Tice at six, and Bruce Stevenson at five. Senior Dick Masland is at four, sophomore Chico de Sola is at three, Captain Jim MacMahon at two, senior Martyn Greenacre at bow, and junior Paul Henry is coxing.
