Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Harvard and Yale took turns blowing chances and turning in spectacular victories, and fought to a 15-15 tie in the season's final wrestling match in the IAB Saturday.
The meet couldn't have started much better for Harvard. Pete Keeler scored a quick takedown and won a 2--0 decision from Yale's once-beaten Bob Foster. Jack Linn, wrestling for the second time this year, followed with a 5-3 win over Jack Gordon at 130.
But the Crimson didn't win any of the next six matches. Sophomore 137-pounder Howie Durfee, sporting the best record of any Harvard wrestler, came roaring from behind in the last minute to go ahead of Jay Fetner 8-7. But Fetner picked up a point for time advantage and a draw. At 147, Yale's rugged Fred Buell battled Brian Conley to a 3-3 tie. Sophomore John Ashby had the crowd howling in the first few minites when he pancaked Yale's best wrestler, Will Elting, and almost pinned him in the first minute. But later it was Ashby who had to fight as hard as he could to stay off his shoulders. Elting won an 8-4 decision.
That tied it up at 10-10, but no one in the Harvard stands was worried, since Fred Pereira was about to take the mat for his last bout at Harvard. But it wasn't Pereira's day. While tying up with Bill Hannah in the first period, he reinjured the rib that he tore against Columbia. Pereira stayed on the mat, but couldn't move well as Hannah coasted to a 5-0 decision. Ben Brooks followed by tying Mike Wilbur, 4-4.
Heavyweight Tack Chace gave it everything he had, but couldn't quite pin Marty Lonergan; Chace's 5-2 win pulled out the tie for Harvard.
