Sextet Tops Tigers 6-2 To Boost ECAC Hopes

The Harvard hockey team scored four second-period goals against Princeton last night, and coasted to a 6-2 win over the Tigers at Watson Rink.

The victory keeps alive Harvard's infinitesimal chance of tying for the Ivy crown, and improves its chances of getting one of the top four seeds in next week's ECAC Tournament. The Crimson's record against Eastern opposition is now 14-6, fourth best in the East.

The small crowd greeted with almost complete silence a poorly played first period in which Harvard grabbed a 1-0 lead, while being outshot 12-9. Gene Kinasewich scored from in front of the Princeton net on a pass from the corner from Baldy Smith, after Kinase-wich had skated the puck from his own end and given it to Smith.

Harvard only came to life in the second period at the 5:38 mark, after Emien Hall bounced one in off Crimson goalie Brandy Sweitzer's stick to tie the score. At 7:33 Billy Lamarche got the Crimson rolling by scoring from close in after Barry Treadwell passed Bobby Clark's rebound over to him.

Bill Fryer made it 3-1 at 8:51 from the corner of the Princeton net on Kinasewich's pass from behind the goal line. Then John Daly took Lamarche's pass and scored from the blue line at 13:17, just ten seconds after the first Tiger penalty of the night.

After Mike Spence reduced Harvard's edge to 4-2 at 6:11 by stealing Smith's pass in the Harvard end and scoring off Sweitzer's pads, Ike Ikauniks took the game out of the Tigers' reach At 19:00 he scored on a breakaway while killing a Crimson penalty.

Sitting on its three-goal lead during the final 20 minutes, Harvard failed to score while it had a man advantage for only the second time since the Clarkson game two weeks ago. Smith closed out the scoring with less than a minute left on passes from Mike Patterson and Fryer.
