Pelsel has been in charge of the institute's Visiting Scholars Program since it was established in 1964. He speaks guests Japanese and reads Chinese, and served in Japan on the staff of the Supreme Commander during the Allied occupation.

The new director will retain his present position as assistant curator of Far Eastern Ethnology in the Peabody Museum.
