Varsity Trackmen Rout Crusader Squad, 75-32

By Philip Ardery

In what was supposed to be a close meet the varsity track team routed the cindermen from Holy Cross at Briggs Cage last night, 75-32. Coach Bill McCurdy's troops racked up 11 firsts in 13 events to maintain their undefeated record in dual meet competition.

Keith Chiappa highlighted the Crimson victory with a stunning win in the 1000-yard run over Crusader ace Bob Credle. Credle, voted the outstanding athlete in the New England AAU Championships just a week ago, stayed confidently on Chiappa's heels for the first five trips around the Briggs oval, but when he tired to pass Chiappa on the final lap, the Crimson junior stepped up his pace and won by two yards, in the fine time of 2:19.6.

Art Croasdale scored a double in the weight events, capturing the shot with a heave of 65 ft., 9 in., his best of the current season, Crimson junior Joe Jurek, who was not expected to place, took second in the weight throw.

Chris Ohiri also won two events, taking the broad jump with an excellent 23 ft., 9 1/4 in. and the 40-yard dash in 4.7.

Ugandan ace Aggrey Aworl scored three times for the Crimson, winning the 40-yard hurdles in 5.3, placing second to Ohiri in the dash, and third to his Nigerian teammate and Holy Cross captain Dick Maiberger in the broad jump, with a leap of 23 ft., 3 1/4 in.

The high jump lived up to its billing as a tight duel between Crimson sophomore Chris Pardee and Crusader Kevin O'Brien, who captured the event in the AAU Championships. Pardee brushed over the bar at 6 ft., 7 in., and O'Brien who had just cleared 6 ft., 6 in., missed in his three tries at that height.

Harvard captain Ed Meehan, still recovering from a cold, won the mile in 4:20.5. The Crimson's Tom Black captured the two-mile in 10:21. Jay Mahaney scored a victory in the pole vault clearing 13 ft. to beat teammate George Winters.

Illness kept the Crimson's Walt Hewlett and John Ogden on the sidelines last night, forcing McCurdy to shuffile his troops and hand the Crusaders a win in the 600-yard run. But John Dockery and Dick Briggs, ordinarily mile-relay men, give a good effort at the distance, finishing only .1 off Pete Seward's winning time of 1:15.5.

The Crimson's next test will come this week-end, when they go against all the other Boston area teams in the Creator Boston Intercollegiate Meet. The G.B.L. which is usually a field day for Harvard, will be held Friday and Saturday.
