LEOPOLDVILLE, The Congo, Dec. 4--A total of 600 white hostages have been rescued from the rebels in the northeastern Congo since Belgian paratroopers pulled out last week, Congolese Premier Moise Tshombe declared Friday night.

He added that a column of mercenaries and Congolese troops, which are moving northward toward the Sudanese border, freed 71 hostages Friday in their drive from Binia, capital of Kibali-Ituri Province on Lake Albert.

Diplomatic sources said another mercenary column, operating north of Stanleyville, had halted its thrust toward the town of Paulis because there were strong reports of about 200 Europeans hiding in the region.

The column had halted at two small towns to permit other hostages to come out of their hiding places in the bush.
