Wrestlers Trek To Coast Guard For Tournament

With a juggled lineup including four sophomores, Coach Bob Pickett leads Harvard's varsity wrestlers into battle today in the Coast Guard Academy Tournament at New London, Conn.

The tournament, the most important event in pre-season competition, has been split into sections this year to pit teams of roughly even ability against one another. Harvard hopes to finish near the top of the second group, with the Crimson's chief opposition coming from Kings Point, Wesleyan, M.I.T., Bucknell, and C.W. Post.

Top contenders for the Crimson are Howard Henjyoji at 123 and Ed Franquemont at 157, both sophomores, Ben Brooks at 177, and heavyweight Tack Chace. All but Brooks won at M.I.T. last Tuesday.

Not completely satisfied with Harvard's ambiguous victory over M.I.T., Pickett has made a number of changes. Tom Gilmore, a winner at 137, returns to his accustomed 130 spot, replacing Mike King. Sophomore Tim McCarthy will wrestle at 137 instead of Gilmore.

Starting at 147 will be senior John Daniels, supplanting Phil Emmi. Sophomore Chris Wickens is slated to go at 167, but Jeff Hall, who won in the M.I.T. match, will make the trip and may wrestle instead.

"We're going down into this tournament with open eyes," said Pickett, hoping to gain both team experience and team laurels in the competition. Pickett is still without two of his best wrestlers: Howie Durfee at 137, who should return for next week's match with Franklin and Marshall, and Pete Keeler at 123, who will be out until after the vacation.
