'Cliffe Dorms Plagued By Thievery; Eliot Resident Cites 'Casual Attitude'

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Petty stealing has plagued several Radcliffe dormitories over the past two weeks. Thefts from girls' rooms have been reported in Holmes, Eliot and Cabot Halls.

Although there have been sweaters skirts and other articles of clothing disappearing, the majority of the thefts have involved handbags, wallets and money.

Marianne Evett. Senior resident of Cabot, yesterday attributed the incidents to carelessness in leaving wallets in plain sight. Catherine B. Sweet, senior resident of Eliot, also blamed the thefts on a "Casual attitude" toward security means the "I hope and think this was just and outside job." she remarked.

In Holmes, "It's pretty clear that there's stealing going on," said Paul Nyhus, senior resident, who believes that "students are the probable source." The last few incidents in Holmes have made it clear that "we may indeed have to take some very drastic steps." Nyhus added.

Nyhus predicted that if such incidents continue, students might request that they be allowed to put locks on bedroom doors. This is now forbidden by the college. Nyhus said he thought the basic problem is not one of locks and guards, but that "we have 100 people living together."

Mary H. Winslow, Director of Residence, however, indicated that no special measures are being taken to deal with the problem at this time.
