The better half of the varsity track team pulverized Boston University in Briggs Cage last night while the scrubs and Providence College provided intermission entertainment with a haphazard contest of their own.
Occasionally, Coach Bill McCurdy's conscience got the best of him, and he interchanged his squads in an effort to ease up on the hapless Terriers. But the best he could do was Harvard 74, B.U. 30, and his kindness only allowed the regulars to give the Providence runners an unpleasant taste of what Harvard track is really like.
Even without the impetus of competition, captain Art Croasdale and junior Chris Pardee came up with stellar performances. Croasdale threw the 35-lb, weight 57 ft., 7 in.--three inches farther than his winning performance against Army last Saturday.
Pardee cleared 6 ft., 9 1-8 in. with only one miss--1.8 in. higher than his own University indoor record, but he won't get credit for a new mark since only 1/4 in. fractions are official.
Triple for Awori
Other performers were less spectacular. Aggrey Awori scored a triple his second in two meets--by winning the 40-yard dash, the 40-yard high hurdles, and the broad jump, but his times and distance were only so-so compared to his weekend efforts against the Cadets.
He nipped teammate Wayne Anderson in the dash in 0:04.8, beat Tony Lynch in the hurdles in 0:05.4, and won the jump with a leap of 22 ft., 4 1/2 in.
With Croasdale sitting out the shotput, Ray Frieden captured first place with a heave of 47 ft, 8 in., well short of his 50-foot-plus put at Army.
Jim Smith won the mile in 4:22.0, with B.U.'s George Starkus second and and Dave Allen third. John Ogden beat out Keith Chiappa on times in the 600, run in two heats. Chiappa won the first heat in 1:16.5 and Ogden held off Sam Robinson to take the second heat and first place in 1:16.1.
McCurdy held his front liners out of the 1000 and B.U.'s Michael Dunn whipped Chuck Redman for first place in 2:20.9. Chippa ran a 1000 against a crew from Providence and won going away in 2:18.6.
Starkus won the two-mile in 9:47.8 with the Crimson's Roger Smith and Jon Chaffee second and third. Walt Hewlett, bothered by a sprained foot, did not compete.
B.U.'s Jeff Blatt won the pole vault at 13 ft, with the Crimson's Ken Winters clearing 12 ft., 6 in. to take second place. The Terrier mile relay team beat a motley crew of Harvardmen in 3:34.4. Awori, Anderson, Lynch, and Neil Houston beat a Providence foursome at the same distance with Lynch going ahead in the last lap to win by fifteen yards.
