Behind the passing and running of quarterback Watts Humphrey, the Yale J.V. football team crumpled Harvard yesterday, 29-9. Humphrey threw for one touchdown and scored another himself, completing 9 out of 11 passes for 124 yards.
Harvard took an early lead on a 22-yard field goal by Jim Babcock, but the Bulldogs bounced back in the second quarter when Humphrey passed 32 yards to Tom Judson for one score and Dick Fates carried an interception back 23 yards for another. Bill Vance kicked both PAT's to give the Elis a 14-3 lead at half-time.
Yale broke the game open in the third quarter when Humphrey ran 51 yards for a touchdown, and Vance again converted. Yale halfback Chris Kule then scored from 29 yards out and added a two-point conversion himself.
Crimson Scores Last
Harvard quarterback John Shevlin completed the scoring by diiving one yard into the end zone late in the third period. The kick failed, and the two teams battled through a scoreless final quarter.
Even though the Crimson outgained Yale on the ground, 147 yards to 114, Humphrey's pinpoint passing gave the Elis the lead in total offense with 238 yards to Harvard's 224. The victory boosts Yale's record for the season to five wins and one loss, while Harvard's mark is evened off at four wins and four defeats. Yale's only setback was at the hands of Princeton last week. The Tigers edged the Bulldogs, 7-6, only a week after losing to the Harvard J.V., 7-3.
