Kubacki, Hughes Lead JV To 29-18 Win Over Tufts

Sophomore quarterback Ray Kubacki paced the junior varsity football team to a 29-18 win over Tufts yesterday in the Stadium. It was the first game of the season for the Crimson JV's.

A few men who may play important roles in Saturday's varsity game with Columbia played with the JV's today. Dave Davis, who may see action because of Neil Curtin's injury, started at tackle and put an impressive rush on Tufts quarterback Ron Sullivan.

Ends Justin Hughes and Dan Calderwood, both of whom figure in Harvard's plans because of a shoulder injury to Ken Boyda, started at end for the JV's.

Hughes Outstanding

It was Hughes, on the receiving end of basses from Kubacki, who scored Harvard's first touchdown and set up the second. The first score came on a 12-yard pitch in the first quarter. Early in the second period a 30-yard Kubacki-to-Hughes toss off a rollout pattern set up a two-yard touchdown run by halfback Gary Halpern.

Halpern and Tom Choquette, who also started yesterday, are likely to see action in the second backfield against Columbia. Starting halfback Dave Poe will miss the game because of a concussion.

After Sullivan brought Tufts back into the game with a score on a 10-yard run, Harvard marched again for a quick touchdown, scoring on halfback Tony Kilcuskie's 11-yard sweep just before the half ended.

The Crimson put the game on ice with a two-yard scoring run by Tom Mechem in the fourth quarter. Kicking specialist Jim Babcock kicked his third conversion of the day to give Harvard its margin.
