Over the past eighteen years, the Ford Foundation has given the University $38,732,175 in grants--more than any other institution in Massachusetts, a report by the foundation reveals.
Harvard received 33 per cent of a total of $130.5 million granted by the foundation to 32 public service institutions and organizations in the Commonwealth. M.I.T. was second with nearly $23 million.
The report, "Ford Foundation Grants in Massachusetts," which lists all grants from 1946 to July 15, 1964, indicates that Harvard's largest grants have been for faculty salaries and development of curriculum. A large number of smaller grants have been established, however, for a wide range of specialized studies.
The programs have included "legal and educational research on de facto segregation and other school integration problems," and two grants for research in juvenile delinquency.
