Wolff Appointed To History Seat For Balkan Work

Robert L. Wolff, '36, authority on relations between eastern and western Europe, has been appointed Coolidge Professor of History at Harvard. He will assume the post on July 1, 1965.

The Coolidge Professorship was established in 1928 through a bequest of Archibald C. Coolidge, historian at Harvard, Professor Coolidge was an enthusiast in the field of European studies and aided in the formation of a Slavic collection in the Harvard Library.

Professor Wolff serves on the Executive Committee of the Russian Research Center at Harvard and on the Board of Scholars of Dumbarton Oaks Library and Research Institute in Washington. He is a trustee of Radcliffe College.

Professor Wolff is currently studying Byzantium and the West in preparation for a study of Russia and the West. He is the author of The Balkans in Our Time and collaborated in the writing of A History of Civilization.

A professor at Harvard since 1955, he was Chairman of the History Department from 1960 to 1963. This year he is teaching History 127, a history of the Byzantine Empire, and two related seminars.

William L. Langer was the last Coolidge Professor; he became Coolidge Professor Emeritus last summer.
