John XXIII

As Pope John nears death, the universal mourning for him shows clearly how much more he has been to the world than simply head of the Church of Rome. His quiet humanitarian faith has passed beyond church doors to reach the minds and consciences of men, and the unobtrusive revolution he has set in motion promises at last a Christianity which is truly catholic.

The Ecumenical Council, the sixth encyclical Pacem in Terris, and his essential kindness make Pope John one of the world's great spiritual leaders. One can only hope that his successor will carry on the work he has begun.
