Eli Deans and Faculty Rap Grading System

A number of Eli deans, faculty member and the Yalle Dally have suggested abandoning Yale's "childish" grading system in favor or something similar to Harvard's Rank List.

Calling the change "completely in harmony with the spirit of the 'new Yale,'" the Daily News supported Dean Richard C. Carroll's suggestion that the present 0-100 scale be replaced by rankings of "Fall, Pass, High Pass, and honors."

Several faculty members criticized the present system for encouraging the Elies' custom of groveling for every additional point they can get.

"Students are placing extreme emphasis on differences between two and three points that, to us, are simply not significant," one professor remarked. "We simply can't be as accurate as the system implies," complained a grader.
