injuries, age, and alcohol were the determining factors in Harvard athletics over the University's first exam weekend. In Saturday's one real sporting event, the inspired Lowell softballers thrashed a House faculty nine, 30-11.
The tutors of Lowell managed to contain their youthful opponents in the early innings, behind the pitching of faculty stand-out Jim McKenna. Unfortunately, the fire-balling ex-marine pulled his left knee after a while and the undergraduates pounded-his scholarly successors for many, many runs.
Keith Cushman, Pete Norman, Dave "Red" Smith, and battling Bob Altman were key figures in the undergraduate onslaught. Cushman's four hits and Norman's four-bagger definitely weakened the opposition's flagging morale.
Umpire Tom Seymour and Smith were other big guns in the Lowell arsenal. Smith's daring on the base paths kept faculty fielders off balance all afternoon.
Undergraduate moundsman Altman made sure that the talented tutors were stymied until erupting for six runs in the final frame.
Free beer and the home-run power of slugging Dick Ullman were instrumental in the late-but futile faculty rally.
