Bates Named Coach Of Harvard's Divers

Charles C. Bates, three years an all-American in diving at the University of Michigan, will become Harvard's diving coach next year. Bates, 31, will replace Ronald Smith, who served as diving coach this year on a temporary appointment.

A resident of Ypsilanti, Mich., Bates was an all-American in 1954, 1955, and 1956 at Michigan. Since graduating he has served as a diving coach at two high schools, and at the University of Minnesota.
