Appointment Ends Long Search

The Rev. Charles P. Price '41, an Episcopalian, has been appointed University Preacher and Plummer Professor of Christian Morals, President Pusey announced today.

Price will serve as resident minister of Memorial Church, directing its nondenominational services and other activities.

Price also serves on a continuing study of "The Total Ministry of the Church." He has been especially interested in the relation of the church to the world, and in the contemporary liturgical movement. He visited centers in England and Germany where studies of church world problems were being made in 1959.

In addition to his other activities price served as rector at St. Michael's of the Valley in Ligonier, Pa., for five years and as assistant minister at St. James' Church in New York City for two years.

Price, who is now 43, is a native of Pittsburgh. As an undergraduate at Harvard he majored in mathematics and received his A.B. degree summa cum laude. He sang in the glee club, worked for PBH, and lived in Eliot House. During World War II he taught marine engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy, and served as engineering officer aboard destroyers. He studied for his B.D. degree at Virginia Theological Seminary, and was ordained in the Episcopal ministry in 1949 In 1962 he received his Th.D. degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York.

Price succeeds the Rev. George A. Buttrick, a Presbyterian, who resigned in June, 1960. The Rev. R. Jerrold Gibson '51 has served as acting minister of Memorial Church since Buttrick's resignation.
