Penalties Hamper Lacrosse Team As Cornell Wins

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The varsity lacrosse team collected a rash of penalties and its first Ivy defeat in Ithaca Saturday, losing to Cornell by a 12-10 score.

Crimson players were penalized a total of 15 times and the Big Red were always quick to take advantage of the extra man each violation provided. Eight of Cornell's 12 goals came with one, sometimes two Harvard stickmen watching from the penalty box.

Midfieler Joe Barton was the Crimson's high scorer with four goals (three coming on passes from attackman Tink Gunnoe). Wally Whitney, another Crimson middle, added two more tallies with four other players each scoring once. The Crimson's attackmen contributed only two goals all afternoon, both on unassisted dodges from behind the goal.

Contrary to popular belief, Ithacan Bing Carlson still plays for the Cornell ten. Very much in evidence Saturday, the big midfielder scored five times against varsity goalies Gil Leaf and Jim Weir.
