Marjorie Stuart Hughes, mother of H. Stuart Hughes, professor of History, died in New York City last Friday. She was 71 years old. Wife of the late Charles Evans Hughes, Jr., former Solicitor General of the U.S., Mrs. Hughes is survived by a son and two daughters, in addition to Hughes.

Last fall, Hughes ran as an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts.

With his mother at the time of her death, Hughes left shortly afterward to fulfill speaking engagements in Toronto and Montreal. He will spend a day at Wells College, in Aurora, N.Y., before returning to New York City for the funeral on Tuesday.
