A highly favored, but uninspired, varsity hockey team came within a minute and forty seconds of losing to lowly Northeastern and bowing out in the opening round of the Bean Pot Tourney last night. The Crimson needed a last minute desperation goal by Ike Ikauniks and a sudden-death play-off tally by Bruce Thomas to top the Huskies 4-3 at the Boston Garden.
Coach Cooney Welland's sextet opened the contest with three quick shots at the Northeastern nots and peppered goalie Gus Capisso with 15 more unsuccessful scoring attempts before the first period was over.
Northeastern lineman Bob Mucinni kept the period from being a shut-out and gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead--rifling the puck past varsity goalie Godfrey Wood at the 19:11 mark.
Varsity captain Tim Taylor tied the score early in the next period on a Dave Johnston pass and it seemed as if the Crimson was well on its way to squelching its opponent for the third time in less than two months.
Instead, the Northeastern six outskated, out-shot, and out-scored the varsity with a goal at 6:06 of the middle period. Showing the effects of exam time inactivity, the Crimson failed to score even when the Huskies lost their sixth man through a two minute interference penalty.
Goal in Overtime
The Crimson tied the score for a second time on a picture pass play from Johnson to left wing Barry Treadwell, at 19:27, Ten seconds later, Northeastern, playing better hockey than it had say right to play, forged ahead 3 to 2 on a slap shot from Ed LeMormand.
Eighteen minutes of shoddy, scoreless hockey followed before Ikauniks converted Gene Kinasewich's pass into the tying goal at 18:20 of the last period.
Thomas' game-winning goal came at 2:43 of the overtime period, giving the Varsity a berth in the Bean Pot finals next Monday night.
