Wrestling Team Gains Close Win Over Tiger Foe

The varsity wrestling team virtually assured itself of a second-place finish in the Ivy League Saturday by overcoming a tenacious Princeton squad, 13-14. Predicted victories over weak Brown and Yale wrestlers would conclude the most successful Harvard wrestling season in a decade and give the matmen a 6-4 record for the year.

Tommy Gilmore provided a key win at 125 lbs, by pinning Tiger Rick Olson with a half nelson, and the Crimson's John Mamana (157) was able to decision Daniel Fisher although hampered by a badly wrenched knee. Dependable Fred Pereira came through, as he has throughout the season, with a fine effort and pinned his Princeton opponent Ted Nation.

In the 137-pound class, Jay Gaffney managed a draw with Donald Taylor; Jack Daniels (147), Ben Brooks (177), and John Hoffman (191), were outclassed by strong Princeton adversaries, but avoided being pinned.

Heavyweights Stall

With the score 15-14 in Harvard's favor, heavyweight Bob Fastov fell behind Woody Hess as each wrestler was assessed penalty points for stalling. The match ended with Fastov trailing 4-3 on the scoreboard, but he gained two points for accumulated riding time and eked out the victory.

The freshman wrestling team defeated the Princeton squad by a score of 22 to 13.
