Crimson Sextet Downs Williams 6-3, Taylor Leads Scorers With 3 Tallies

By Robert A. Ferguson

Half the hockey team was sick or injured and the other half couldn't have felt too well in the first period of last night's contest at Watson rink. Without the services of its first and second string goalies, the Crimson gave under-dog Williams a 3-0 lead before blasting the Ephmen 6-3.

Captain Tim Taylor was the spark plug in the varsity's come-from-behind conquest, scoring three goals and registering two assists for a five point effort.

Goalies Godfrey Wood and Chris Steed-man, both out with the flu, joined Billy Lamarche and Mike Patterson on coach Cooney Weiland's list of sidelined players. Brandy Switzer (17 saves) played the nets for the Crimson last night while Weiland juggled his depleted forward lines to the tune of six goals and the varsity's 13th victory.

Still stunned by Monday night's Bean Pot loss, the varsity let the mediocre Ephmen dominate play for the better part of the opening period. Williams scored first at 6:41 with a three on two break and added another goal at the 12 minute mark to take a 2-0 lead.

The visitors' star center Tom Roe (22 goals in 16 games) scored Williams' second tally on a long shoulder high shot from the left side of the nets. Roe left two Crimson defenseman in his wake on the play and eventually took part in all three Williams' goals.

Trailing by two, the varsity finally cracked the scoring column on Taylor's first goal at 14:26 of the first period. Fifty seconds later, the 6 ft. 1 in, senior poked another one past Williams' goalie Bob Rich on a feed from teammate Ike Ikauniks.

The varsity failed to score again in the first 20 minutes, but needed only seven seconds of the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Dick Blakey, playing on the first line with Taylor and Ikauniks, took the opening face-off and fed Taylor, who pushed the puck past Rich.

Less than a minute later, positions were reversed with Taylor passing to Blakey for the Crimson's fourth score and a comfortable two goal lead.

William's Roe cut the varsity margin in half on another solo play late in the middle period. The Ephmen's center dribbled through the Harvard secondary for the fourth time to make the tally.

Gene Kinasewich and Blakey rounded out the scoring with two goals in the final period. In winning, the Crimson collected its usual rash of fouls, spending a total of 14 minutes in the penalty box.
