Five records fell before a powerful Navy swimming squad as the Middies swamped Harvard 57-38 in Annapolis Saturday. Navy captain Mike Collins highlighted the day by turning in a 47.9 Academy and pool record in the 100-yard freestyle, the best collegiate time in the event reported this season.
The Middies began their record-shattering pace in the very first race, setting a new pool mark of 3:43.8 in the medley relay. They went on to win six of the remaining ten events, finishing 1-2 in two others.
Pool and Academy records were set in the 200-yard backstroke and the free relay, while Doug Morris eclipsed the pool mark for the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.6. Bill Fries led Tim Beard in Navy's sweep of the backstroke with a 2:06.3, and the Middles closed out the afternoon with a relay time of 3:19.9.
Harvard's best performance came from junior Dave Abramson, who stroked from behind in the final seven yards of the 500 free to touch out Navy's Buddy Weir in 5:19.0. Abramson had less trouble with Weir in the 200-yard freestyle, bettering him by a full second with 1:51.9.
In the only Crimson sweep of the afternoon, Bill Chadsey won the 200-yard breastroke easily in 2:20.8, followed by teammate Bruce Fowler.
In diving, Dan Mahoney scored handily over Navy's Tom Newell, chalking up a remarkable 88.35 points in his first time on a three-meter board.
The closest race of the day turned into a Navy sweep as Collins took the 50-yard freestyle in 22.1 a hairsbreadth ahead of Andy Hogg and Harvard's Doug Miller.
Navy found the next event less grueling , however, as Tim Beard eased to victory over Joe Stetz with a 2:09.8 in the 200-yard individual medley.
