The freshmen soccer team fought both high winds and a fast Andover squad for a 2-1 victory yesterday at the Business School soccer field. It was the team's fourth victory in five games.
Both of Harvard's goals came in the first quarter, when the wind was with the booters. Right halfback Andy Kydes scored first on a penalty kick. Five minutes later left halfback Ken Mallory successfully placed a 25-yard shot behind the Andover goalie for the Crimson's second point. The goals were the first for both players this season.
Andover dominated the second period play, when the wind was favorable to the prep-school booters. They scored their only goal of the game five minutes into the quarter.
Coach Dana Getchel's short passing game gave the Crimson control of the ball for three of the four periods of play. Outstanding throughout the game were center forward Jim Saltonstall and center halfback Tony Marks, captain.
The Crimson kept the ball in Andover territory for most of the game, giving goalie Richard Hammond only six opportunities to block Andover scoring attempts. Hammond was out for the first three games with an injured elbow, but played a full game yesterday.
With a 4-1 record the freshmen face their toughest games when they meet Brown Nov. 15 and Yale Nov. 22. Yale has tied 1-1 with Andover and 2-2 with Brown.
Harvard suffered its only loss last Friday when Dartmouth trumphed 2-1. Coach Getchel's eleven previously blanked M.I.T. freshmen 3-0 and Tufts freshmen and Exeter 4-0. They face the University of Connecticut this Saturday and Princeton Nov. 9.
