The John W. Perdew Fund has raised over $2000 and is picking up additional support in its drive to raise $5000 by Nov. 6.
The fund received the endorsement Thursday of the Kirkland House Senior Common Room, an organization composed of the Master and tutors affiliated with the House. The group promised to aid in the solicitation of faculty and the administration. More support developed yesterday when James S. Gordon '62, a medical student, offered to canvas the entire Med School for the fund.
According to the fund's chairman, Howard L. Schecter '65, student response "has generally been great." Schecter complained however, that contributions from the Freshman Union have fallen far short of those from any of the Houses. He said that, among the Houses, Perdew's own Kirkland, Winthrop, Eliot, and Adams had been extremely generous.
All receipts from the fund will go toward the legal defense of John W. Perdew '64, currently being held in a Georgia jail for his part in civil rights demonstrations this summer.
Schecter explained that the fund may be closer to the $5000 goal than the figures indicate. "Our present figure of $2000 does not include Radcliffe contributions," he said. "By the beginning of next week we should be getting the first results of the 'Cliffe drive and hopefully these will add considerably to the total."
If the campaign does not attain its goal by Nov. 6, it will probably move to the campuses of neighboring schools, beginning with Brandeis.
