The Boston Rugby Club smashed Harvard 12-0 here on Saturday. This defeat in Harvard's third game of the season leaves the Crimson with a 1-2 record before facing Dartmouth next weekend.
Boston excelled in the scrum which scored two tries (both unconverted) early in the first period. A penalty kick against Harvard upped the scored to 9-0 before the first period ended.
Problems in the Crimson pack were due mostly to lack of coordination and the absence of both its two usual scrumhalfs. Lee Freeman as pinch hitter did a passable job but excels further back in the scrum.
There was an unusual amount of kicking which one elderly (29-year old) Boston player believed was designed to avoid too much running in the hot weather. Punting loosed up play considerably.
The Crimson's tackling was too high. Hopefully there will be some improvement by next week when tackling will be of the utmost importance. Aiming low will always bring the man down, but also gives him a chance to pass. However, grabbing him around the shoulders and dragging along behind him is quite ineffective.
Out of the Scrum
Harvard's backs did not cover across well. When the ball shoots out of the scrum, it goes through the three-quarter line to the wing, supposedly the fastest player, who tries to beat the opposition down the side of the field. When the opposition prevents this, he passes back to the forwards who then try to get it to the backs. Play does not often get that far, however.
Second Team Loses
The Crimson's backs were not passing and catching as well as they did last week, although there were a couple of excellent plays by Bruce Caputo, Lee Freeman and Gage McAfee.
The second team had a difficult time as expected, and lost 20-0. This was the first game for more than half the side.
