Students last night were strongly urged not to send letters to Congressmen in support of Fred L. Wallace, a law student now facing an indictment for felonious assault in Prince Edward County, Va.
Richard B. Klein 3L, chairman of an ad hoc committee of law students helping Wallace, made the request, noting that publicity could very well hurt Wallace's chances of acquittal.
A circular distributed in the dining halls last night asked students to write Congressmen about Wallace and John W. Perdew '64, who is now in a Georgia jail on a charge of inciting to insurrection. The circular was apparently written by students working for Perdew without consultation with the Wallace group.
Klein said that while Perdew might be helped by additional national attention, Wallace's predicament was very different. He said his group had been told that outside pressure would adversely affect Wallace. "It is wrong to lump the two cases together," Klein stated.
