Harvard's varsity sailing team defends its Greater Boston Championship in a race in the Charles River Basin today.

Both Boston University and M.I.T. have excellent crews this season, and will offer stiff competition to the Crimson sailers. Hit hard by the graduation of its three top men, the Crimson must count heavily on the development of sophomore Steve Bello, and the performance of returning lettermen Dave Stookey, Dave Gantz, Tim Prince, and Guy Carden.

The seven schools competing in today's regatta are Harvard, M.I.T., Babson Boston University, Boston College, Tufts, and Northeastern. Three separate divisions will be run, with one boat from each college in each division. Captain Stookey, Prince, and Bello will skipper the Crimson entries. The triangle course in the basin is about one and a quarter miles long, and, weather permitting, can be covered in 25 minutes.

Tomorrow the sailing team will appear in two more regattas. At 9:30 a.m. Harvard will protect its hold on the Wood Trophy which it won last year, against crews from M.I.T., Dartmouth, Brown, and the Coast Guard. This major inter-collegiate sailing event will also be held in the Charles River Basin. Only one division will be run, with two entries from each school.

At 10:00 a.m. in New London, the Harvard team sallies forth against crews from Connecticut in the Raven Hexagonal, a relatively unimportant contest.

Next weekend the Crimson sailors will begin their defense of their team racing championship in preliminary eliminations for the title contest to be held on the weekend of November 9. On November 2-3 the team competes in the Schell Trophy Regatta at M.I.T.
