Langan Plans 'Presentation Session' To Introduce College Birch Chapter

After a false start last fall, the John Birch Society is trying again to form a Harvard chapter.

Phillip Langan, New England Co-ordinator for the JBS magazine, "American Opinion," reported yesterday that a "presentation session" may be held this November if enough Harvard students can be interested in the organization.

Last year's plans called for a similar session in the spring, but it never came off. Sixteen Harvard students were then involved in the plans. Langan said that nine of these men had since graduated.

He explained that a presentation session consists of the showing of a one-and-a-half hour film in which founder Robert Weich explains the nature of the Communist conspiracy, followed by an organizational meeting. If enough people are interested in forming a local chapter, they are signed up at the meeting.

Since no Harvard chapter was set up, the 16 interested students worked with Boston JBS chapters, Langan explained. The Birch Society hopes to organize the remaining seven students and "several others" who had written to "American Opinion" asking for Birch Society literature. Plans hinge on finding enough men to form a chapter.

Langan admitted that not all those writing for literature were potential Birchers. "They could be liberals or something else, ... but we follow up on all of them."
