Protesting cumpulsory chapel attendance, 500 of Bowdoin College's 800 students wedged themselves into the college chapel early this week. The chapel's seating capacity is 200.
A Bowdoin official described the students an "dignified and good natured." Those who could found seats on the floor. Others simply stood wherever there was room. None of the students referred to their attendance as being a protest.
The demonstration was apparently touched off by a notice from the dean of students, A. Leroy Greason, Jr. Greason had announced that a student's failure to attend chapel the required number of times during the semester would be "adequate basis for any later action."
Seniors must be present at 15 daily and five Sunday services each term; juniors and sophomores, 20 and five; freshman 25 and six.
