The 12-meter sloop "Weatherly" yesterday clinched the America's Cup by beating the Australian challenger "Gretel" by 600 yards in a windwardleeward 24-mile yacht race off Newport, Rhode Island.

The best of seven series was won by Bus Moshacher's boat after the fifth race of the sequence. Gretel won only the second race, and became the first challenger in the 111 years of competition to beat an American boat.
