Firm Begins Survey Of Traffic in Square

Another brave firm has joined the everlasting battle to save the streets around the Square from an eternal traffic jam.

For the past two days, representatives of Bruce Campbell and Associates, traffic engineers, have been wandering through the streets with clipboard in hand, accosting motorists entering or leaving parking spaces.

In an attempt to get the "line of flight" of automobiles passing through the Square, Campbell's men ask the motorist three questions:

* where did you come from; i.e. what was your last stop before reaching Harvard?

* what is your purpose in parking here (to shop, attend classes, work)?

* where do you live?

From these questions, the engineers hope to determine where the traffic comes from and where it is going as it flows in and out of the Square.

Campbell was hired by the City of Cambridge,s new traffic engineer. The firm will study several other major sources of traffic congestion in Cambridge, when the Harvard survey is completed.
