Harvard's Graduate School of Education will establish a new Center for Studies in Educational Development to explore the progress of education in developing nations of the world and eventually to take over the School's Overseas educational programs. Francis G. Keppel, Dean of the Graduate School of Education, announced early this week that a large grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York will support the work.
Research in the Center will focus on the relationship of educational programs to social and economic change in the underdeveloped countries.
Although the main emphasis of the Center will be on research, its members will also teach in seminars on related topics. There will be fellowships and research assistantships available to train young scholars to undertake reseach in the field.
The new Center will work closely with Harvard's established Center for International Affairs on Educational aspects of developing programs for foreign countries. Some joint appointments will be made in the two Centers.
Keppel has announced the appointment of Chalres T.W. Curle, a visiting professor of Education at Harvard last year, as Director of the Center.
