Hughes insists that his is not merely a "token candidacy", but he has made every effort to bring the issues of disarmament and peace before the publiv.

Late in April he gave the major speech at a large peace rally in Boston and told 1200 people gathered on the Common that "there must be recognition by this country and admission to the United Nations of all existing Communist states." "He also urged that the United States withdraw its military bases from Turkey."

Since then, Hughes has travelled all over the Commonwealth, addressing both large and small groups and making his position known. He was in Springfield at the time of the Democratic convention, but at no time appeared in the convention hall.

Hughes has until July 24 to file his completed petitin with the Massachusetts Election Commission.
