Tennis courts will be open weekdays form 9 a.m. to dusk and on Sundays from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mr. Kimball Jones will offer both group and private lessons to Summer school students.
The fee for group instruction is $10 for eight lessons. Each lesson lasts one hour, and classes will meet twice a week for four weeks. The fee for individual instruction is $5 per hour.
A school-wide tennis tournament will be held through the session for registered students. Tournament divisions will include men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles. The entry fee is $1 and interested students may sign up in Matthews 4.
Harvard Yacht Club dinghies will be available for sailing at the M.I.T. sailing pavilion. Summer school students may join the club for $10 for the summer after passing a 100 for the summer after passing a 100 yard swim test. Instruction in elementary sailing techniques will be offered to neophyte members of the club at no extra charge.
Wherries and shells are available for boating on the Charles River. Boats are at the Weld boat House, only a short distance from the Yard. A season ticket is $7,50, single use is 75. The boat house is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Swimming is best at the many salt water beaches in the area. The Atlantic coast is justly renowned for its fine beach facilities, and some of the best beaches in the East are within easy driving distance of Cambridge.
Crane's Beach on the North Shore is only minutes from Harvard sq. The many fine beach areas in the Cape Cod region are within an hour's driving time from Cambridge.
Slightly farther from the Square (about two to three hours driving) are beaches in the nearby states of Maine and Rhode Island. The water is cold but brisk in Old Orchard and Ogunquit Maine, and Narrangansett, Newport, and Misquamicut, Rhode Island have fine swimming facilities.
For those in Cambridge, the Indoor Athletic building's pool will be open through the summer. A season pass is $7.50, single use is 75 and lessons fare available at $1n per held hour lesson.
