CHANNEL TUNNEL

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

Thank you for your energetic coverage of my remarks on the Channel Tunnel, at Lowell House yesterday evening. One or two small points: Mathieu Favier was not Napoleon's staff sergeant but an eminent engineer. And today's tube and tunnel people are on speaking terms: beyond the Channel, members of the competing groups, both of which consist of highly reputable firms, frequently engage in successful ventures together.

If you consult an atlas you will notice that the town near the (proposed) British terminal is Ashford, not Ashbury, and that on the French side the town is Sangatte, not "St. Gatte." Indeed, as far as I know, the Calendar of Saints does not mention Saint Gatte.

And I have no idea whether General de Gaulle and Prime Minister Macmillan will soon sign a treaty authorizing construction of a Channel Tunnel.

Addendum: in re the very flattering silhouette, Camp William James perhaps foreshadowed the Peace Corps rather than "proved to be the origins of the Peace Corps." Frank P. Davidson '39.
