Lacrosse Squad Overwhelmed by Yale Barrage, 13-7, As Hot Weather, Poor Offense Mar Crimson's Effort

Eli captain Gib LaMotte, a pinched nerve, and the hottest game day of the season all played a part in the Yale lacrosse team's whopping 13 to 7 vicotry over the varsity Saturday. En route to their second Ivy defeat of the season, the Crimson stickmen lost face-off after face-off, neglected to pick up loose ground balls, failed to clear consistently, and suffered heavily in the 99-degree weather. The Bulldogs didn't seem to mind the heat.

The varsity started well, scoring first on an extra-man play at 1:11 of the first period. The tally came on the now familiar Grady-Watts-to-Lou-Williams pattern and second to mark the beginning of another Crimson conquest. But Coach Bruce Munro's team hit on only one other extra man play all afternoon and reached the scoring column just one more time in the entire first half.

Yalle LaMotte evened the count at 4:24 of the opening period with his first score of the afternoon. Moments later. Crimson attackman Woody Spruance pulled up with a pinched nerve behind his left knee and had to leave the game. Before the period had ended, LaMotte and two other Bulldogs rammed shots past Crimson goalls Gill Leaf and the score was 4 to 1.

The second quarter was more of the same. The Ells scored three times more (LaMotte's third goal included); the Crimson tallied once. Dave Nyhan, replacing Spruance on attack, picked up the varsity mark.

Six Crimson penalties and Bulldog hustle led to four more Eli goals in the third period, putting the game out of Harvard's reach. Coach Munro substituted goalle Jim Weir for Leaf in an effort to stop the Yalle scoring parade, but the margin of victory grew steadily.

In the final period LaMotte continued his brilliant performance by flipping passes to Bobby Grose and John Walker. Each stickman rifled a shot once past Leaf, who had returned to the Crimson nets late in the quarter.

With the score 13 to 4, the varsity ten finally came to life, producing three goals in the last five minutes. Captain Grady Watts pocked up his first goal of the afternoon on a solo dodge. Misfielders Joey Prahl and Tink Gunnoe brought the Crimson total to seven before the final gun.
