Netmen Triumph In Two Matches

The varsity tennis team tuned up for Wednesday's Yale match with two weekend victories. Harvard squenked past Amherst 5 to 4 Friday in an away contest and returned to Cambridge to defeat Navy 7 to 2 on Saturday.

In both matches it was the lower and of the ladder which provided the Crimson's margin of victory. Captain Paul Sullivan lost twice at number one singles, but at number four, five, and six, Harvard players did not lose a set.

At Amherst Harvard combined four singles victories with one in doubles to scrape past the Lord Jeffs. At third singles, Vic Niederhoffer lost a tough, three-set decision to Amherst's Roger Alcaly, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Harvard dropped two doubles matches, but Sullivan and Frank Ripley easily won their crucial match at first doubles, 6-3, 6-2.

Against Navy the Crimson lost the first two singles but breezed through the rest of the afternoon with the loss of only two other sets. Sullivan who seemed to be bothered by glasses he was wearing in competition for the first time, gave way after a close first set, losing to Colan Fox 9-7, 6-2. At second singles, Navy's Lee Pekary turned in a fine performance to defeat Frank Ripley 9-7, 6-4.
