The varsity heavyweight crew faces Navy and Penn at Annapolis Saturday for the Goldthwait Cup in what will be one of the most crucial races of the season.
Beset by had racing conditions and jinxed courses, Coach Harvey Love's oarsmen have not had a real chance to prove themselves. Love has made two changes in the varsity boat that lost last week's race, and, weather permitting, Saturday's race may decide what the heavyweights will do for the rest of the year.
Sophomore Mike Dennis will be the stroke of the new varsity boat, replacing Dick Masland, who will stroke the JV's. In the other change, Love has switched Doug Robertson and Nick Bancroft, putting the latter at six, and Robertson at tour. Otherwise, the boat has remained the same.
Meanwhile, the lightweight crews have undergone even more extensive changes, and for the third straight week Coach Larry Coolidge will be racing a different varsity boat Saturday. This time the lightweights will face Yale and Princeton at Princeton.
