With its back to the wall (as they say) the varsity baseball team takes on Army at Soldiers Field this afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
Having lost to Dartmouth 3 to 5 Wednesday, the Crimson is now in second place behind the undefeated Cadets in the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League. The Harvard nine has won 14 and lost 2 this season, including 12 in a row prior to the Dartmouth game.
Paul Del Rossi, Harvard's ace lefthander, will be shooting for his seventh straight victory against the heavy-hitting West Pointers. Only a sophomore, Del Rossi mixes a variety of speeds and pitches to keep opposing batters consistently off balance. Not overpoweringly fast, he uses his slow stuff to set up hitters and make the fast ball seem quicker than it is.
Season's End
By winning today, Coach Norman Shepard's boys will be in a fine position to win their first EIBL crown since 1959. The Crimson and Army will then have one loss each, but the Cadets still have to play several tough teams including Navy. The Crimson only has one more game, with Yale, May 19.
Shepard reported last night that the team was not disheartened by the loss to Dartmouth and will be ready for Army. He added that the lineup will remain the same, although he night juggle the batting order a bit.
He will need the batting power of Gavin Gilmor, Dick Diehl, and Curly Combs as well as spectacular fielding from Mike Drummey to beat the powerful Army nine.
