Hockey Six Wins 93; Scores 20th Victory

The varsity hockey team, swinging from the heels, completed the second 20-win season in Crimson history with a 9-3 triumph over Yale Saturday night at the Boston Garden. It was the first time the Crimson had swept its season series with the Bulldogs since 1958.

Captain Dave Grannis and Dave Morse paced the Crimson with two goals apiece, and Chris Norris, Bill Beckett, Gene Kinasewich, Ike Ikauniks, and Jim Dwinell each tallied once. In all, the varsity fired 60 shots at Bulldog goalie Scott Nelson.

In the second and third periods, the varsity stopped worrying about defense, and the Elis had virtually unobstructed paths to three goals. Even so, Yale launched only 16 shots at the Crimson nets all evening, as the varsity dominated play from start to finish.

Grannis led off the scoring by shouldering his way down the right boards and pushing the puck through a milling crowd in front of the Yale cage at 1:44.

After Norris, assisted by Tom Heintzman and Dave Johnston, tallied from a sitting position at 5:07, Grannis connected again. At 11:10, he shot a pass toward the Yale nets, and when the puck slid out of the ensuing melee, he flipped it into the goal. Morse was credited with an assist.

Morse got both his goals on carom shots off Yale goalie Nelson. At 16:17 of the first period, with both teams a man short. Grannis brought the puck down the middle, and passed off to Morse. Morse cut loose with a short, hard blast that hit Nelson on the shoulder and dribbled in. Mike Patterson also assisted on the play.

For his second tally, Morse took a pass from Kinasewich, and bounced a long screamer off Nelson at 13:00 of the final period. This goal came with the Crimson a man down--a situation which the varsity actually seemed to enjoy Saturday night.

Nelson had a rough evening in general. At 6:55 of the second period, the Crimson's Ron Thomson launched a shot from the point. In the scramble that followed. Beckett notched the Crimson's fifth goal. When the dust cleared, there lay Nelson, flat on his back, with his head in the cage.

In the third period, Thomson started the ball rolling with another long drive. Ikauniks and Gerry Jorgenson began pushing the puck and assorted Ell defenders around, and eventually Ikauniks scored at 6:31. This time the Garden ice looked like a graveyard, with Nelson and defenseman Wyllys Terry stretched out flat.

At 2:01 of the final stanza, Nelson offered the worst of his indignities, as Kinasewich after a pass from Grannis sent one into the nets from well outside the blue line.

The final Crimson tally came at 16:28 of the third period, on a Beckett-to-Morse-to-Dwinell combination.

Dave Crosby, assisted by Tim Sargeant, scored for Yale in the second period, and Bill Rulon-Miller and Steve Ripley added unassisted goals in the closing session.

Ikauniks injured his ankle when he crashed into the boards late in the third period; he may miss the ECAC game with Army tomorrow. Tim Taylor, who did not play Saturday night, is expected to be ready, however.
